Job purpose/summary The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist conducts surveys and inspections of all occupational environments to recognize, control and eliminate occupational safety and health hazards.
Essential duties and responsibilities • Models the mission, vision, values, and culture of the organization • Assists in administration, maintenance, and review of safety policies created following OSHA, NIOSH, and ANSI standards • Identifies, analyzes, and aids in mitigation of job specific hazards and conditions that may cause life loss, illness, injury or property damage • Supports strategies that build awareness and enthusiasm around the importance of a safe work culture • Maintains designation as a “competent person” for fall protection, and 70E non-qualified electrical worker • May coordinate employee respirator fit testing and audiograms at Rawhide • Conducts, coordinates, or facilitates division and site wide department safety meetings • Follows up injuries with an accident investigation to identify root cause and develop processes to mitigate risk for future injuries • Identifies, evaluates, and purchases safety equipment • Calibrates and provides for the use of special field equipment, evaluates or coordinates noise monitoring, noise abatement and assists in the elimination or control of hazardous conditions • Leads or assists with workers’ compensation process in the event of an injury • Coordinates, schedules, or performs required inspections, maintenance, and testing of various safety equipment and systems.
• Submits work orders for timely correction of safety or operational issues • Facilitates safety discussions with employees • Evaluates and coordinates ergonomic issues with employees • Participate as a member on employee or organizational committees and project teams as needed • May serve within the Emergency Response Team • May assist with support for various outage needs • May assist with coordination and scheduling of inspections, maintenance, and testing of safety equipment and systems • Performs other duties as assigned Other functions • Thorough knowledge and application of OSHA general industry, NIOSH, and ANSI standards • Ability to enter confined and/or restricted spaces, wear personal protective equipment, and climb ladder and stairs to upper elevations • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Strong time management skills • Ability to work with little or no supervision • Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization • Well versed in the delivery of internal customer service and relationship managemen Supervisory controls This position has no supervisory or lead role responsibilities Knowledge, skills, and abilities Requirements • Thorough knowledge and application of OSHA general industry, NIOSH, and ANSI standards • Ability to enter confined and/or restricted spaces, wear personal protective equipment, and climb ladder and stairs to upper elevations • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Strong time management skills • Ability to work with little or no supervision • Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization • Well versed in the delivery of internal customer service and relationship management Qualifications Education & Licenses • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under the vehicle liability policy and be subject to random drug screening under DOT requirements as a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver • Fall protection competent person certification and NFPA 70E non-qualified electrical worker certification within two years of hire date • Current certification, or ability to obtain certification as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist (COHC) as necessary • Current certification, or ability to obtain spirometry technician certification through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved course as necessary Required work experience • Three years occupational safety experience Preferred work experience and/or education • Certification and maintenance of skills in Safety & Health (OHST, ASP, CSP or CUSP) • Ability to maintain or obtain a certified safety professional certification within one year of meeting eligibility requirements • Ability to maintain or obtain state certification as Emergency Medical Technician • Obtain certification in basic life support (CPR, first aid) • Knowledge of Microsoft suite.
• Well versed in office and work site ergonomics (CEAS, CIE, CAE, CAsE) Physical Demands Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions.
Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.

, 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
